History - Medieval India
Different Historians have provided different dates and events for the beginning and end of Medieval Period in India. As per one estimate it began in 8th Century and continued till 16th Century. Most of the historians agree that medieval period commence with fall of Gupta Empire in India which was around 480 to 550.
During Medieval period North India was ruled by Muslim dynasties collectively known as Delhi sultanate. These dynasties rules nearly 300 years in North India. These dynasties were
Mamluk Dynasty Also known as Slave Dynasty started with Qutub ud Din Aibak who became sultan of Delhi after death of Master Muhammad Ghori. This dynasty ruled over Delhi from 1206 to 1290.
Khalji dynasty ruled Delhi from 1290 to 1320.
Tughlaq dynasty ruled Delhi from 1320 to 1414
Sayyid dynasty ruled Delhi from 1414 ruled Delhi from 1451
Lodi dynasty ruled Delhi from 1451 to 1526.
Unlike North India which was ruled by single dynasty South India was ruled by number of dynasties as the same time. Most notable Dynasties which ruled south India were
Rashtrakuta dynasty: Its empire was spread from Central India to Western Ghats from 6th to 10 Century.
Chalukyas ruled from 7th to 12 century over the area which is present day Andhra Pradesh.
